From June, the North Coast turns its eyes to the sea. Humpback and southern right whales move up the warm Agulhas current, often within a few hundred metres of the shore.
Where to watch
The high vantage points along the Ballito Promenade are the easiest place to start. Bring binoculars and get there early, the light is best before mid-morning.
- Thompson's Bay headland
- Salt Rock viewpoints
- Sheffield Beach dunes
When to go
Peak sightings run June to October, with September usually the busiest. Calm, clear mornings after a cold front are ideal.
Pair a morning of whale watching with a slow coffee on the coast and you have a perfect winter day out.
